Quite prophetic! This piece of correspondence in Chess Café ( US chess site)dating back to times immemorial reveals, to a certain extent, my insight into the future which has become our present...( I am drawing your attention to the exact date of my response!..)

Postings for January 2000 Khariton’s The KGB and Chess

185-1 I think the article gives a rather aggravated view of influence of KGB on chess. This is achieved by not distinguishing between the obvious changes that took place in the KGB itself from 1930's to 1990's. While in early 1930's we can find the KGB as an organisation willing to torture and murder people to 'support' Stalins grip on the nation and to serve his paranoia. The KGB in last few decades of this century certainly wasn't nearly as frightening and perhaps served to solve some real problems of national security. I mean, with the coming of Putin to the vice-presidency, you probably won't expect Russia to become a big concentration camp. Quite the contrary. I recall reading recently that during the later decades the KGB became probably 'the most European' organ in Russian government. While this may be arguable, one needs to bear in mind that KGB agents that followed Karpov and Kasparov to their tournaments were certainly not the same monsters who
tortured and murdered Buharin some 50 years ago. Sergei Kanevsky [12-4-1999]

185-2 I have been waiting patiently since the posting of Sergei Kanevsky' comment on my article The KGB and Chess at The Chess Cafe. However, no one has replied to his naive, not to say myopic, definition of the KGB and its ominous influence on the life of the Russian people (and not only the Russian people) for many decades up through the present day. Yes, through the present day! Now, with the year 2000 on the threshold, I should like to write a few words that may make people more vigilant for the future. Among the millions of words existing in different languages, there is only one word that cannot be used in the subjunctive mood. This word is "freedom"! The theory of relativity does not apply to this word either. So, there cannot be more freedom or less freedom. The very idea of setting up the KGB in the Soviet Union was to achieve absolute control over the people in whatever sphere they worked. Chess was just one of the many human activities.
Well, if the KGB, according to Kanevsky, has become more liberal and "European", why did its agents accompany Karpov and Kasparov to their matches? Why should, in general, the KGB agents accompany chess players? Perhaps for the sake of "national security"? I would be glad if anyone could give a more or less plausible answer to this question. Kanevsky maintains that "KGB agents that followed Karpov and Kasparov to their tournaments were certainly not the same monsters who tortured and murdered Buharin some 50 years ago." I would say, they were monsters, but not the same. Another quote: "...with the coming of Putin to the vice-presidency, you probably won't expect Russia to become a big concentration camp".

But if it becomes a small one? Lev Khariton 1-1-2000
